"Coach Dawn is perfect for any triathlete looking to learn long course triathlon or step up their game especially in the half or full IM distance. For the beginner triathlete, she is an educator. For the intermediate, she can help refocus and balance priorities. For the advanced, she can connect you with like minded and fit people. The best part of an athlete's time with Coach Dawn is that she is as engaged as you need her to be. In my own case, I have never felt more physically and mentally fit in the sport of triathlon than when I learned and worked within Coach Dawn's methodology. -- Rick Marfori"
Testimonials
I am a two-time Ironman Finisher. I finished Ironman Coeur D’Alene in 2008 at the age of 38 and the inaugural 2010 Ironman St. George at 40. I hired professional coaches for both events because I was extremely busy at work and I needed help devising a program that my schedule would accommodate. In addition, I’ll admit that the distance was daunting. Though I had completed multiple marathons, bike centuries, and a handful of 70.3 triathlons, I knew that Ironman is a completely different beast.
My first coaching experience was a let down. While the coach was a professional triathlete, we never met in person and I had limited access to him consisting of e-mails and one telephone call per month. In the end, the experience fell far short of my expectations.
My experience with Coach Dawn was completely different. First of all, Dawn spent a considerable amount of time testing and getting to know me as an athlete and understanding what my body was truly capable of. She learned both my strengths and weaknesses and developed a plan that brought me into much better balance as a triathlete. So much so, that I was able to improve my PR at Ironman California by 20 minutes!
When I looked for an Ironman race that I could fit in around a busy job that included plenty of travel and a balanced family life (I’m married with two kids), the Ironman St George was the only one that made sense. I signed up knowing little about the course only to find out that it was being touted as the toughest course in North America. The internet quickly began buzzing with countless testimonials from athletes who knew the course and warned about how extreme the climbs on both the bike and run would be. There was even constant debate about bike gearing and whether athletes on road bikes (vs TT bikes) would fair better. Dawn helped me see past all the chatter and focus on what was important: training. Better yet, she too signed up for Ironman St. George and trained alongside me. That alone was priceless. Dawn quickly learned first-hand how my body handled the long miles, different heart rate zones, and hills, hills, hills. Consequently, training adjustments were based on what I was truly capable of, not some “cookie-cutter” plan. In addition, Dawn constantly stressed nutrition and taught me how to fuel properly and avoid the GI issues I experienced at Ironman Coeur D’Alene.
We arrived in Utah a few days prior to the race. Needless to say, I think most everyone was taken back by how HUGE the mountains were!!! However, Dawn assured me that we’d put in the right amount of hill training and that we would be just fine. We drove and studied the course talking through how to attack its many challenges.
Race day remains one of my fondest memories. I climbed hills on the bike confidently while many walked and even gave up. In fact, the race had the second highest DNF rate in Ironman history. Having conquered the Rockies, I got off my bike feeling fresh and confident for the run. The course seemed like one giant hill, but gain, training with Dawn paid off. I finished the race with a smile, rush of emotion, and a profound sense of accomplishment knowing that I’d done something extraordinary. More importantly, I owe it all to Dawn and her commitment to helping my redefine what I am capable of. I am forever grateful.
